Saguaros : FAQ and Care Information
What is a Saguaro?
The saguaro is one of the largest cacti in the Sonoran Desert. The white blossom of the saguaro is the state flower of Arizona. Its unique form and massive size make it the most recognizable and iconic of desert plants. Many desert creatures depend on the plant for shelter, and the fruit and seeds for food.
How fast do saguaros grow/ How old is my Plant?
The saguaro grows very slowly. It will typically take 50-80 years for it to grow ten feet tall and to grow arms. The tallest saguaros may grow as high as 50 feet. Giant may weigh as much as seven tons and live more than 150 years.
Watering Information
After your saguaro is planted, allow it to cure in the ground for at least one month before beginning supplemental watering.
Water the plant by placing a hose a few feet away from the base and giving the plant a slow, deep drink. Do not allow ground to become over-saturated or water to pool around base or the plant. repeat on all sides during periods of prolonged drought. Always allow ground to dry out between watering.
Once established, Saguaros will require very little supplemental watering except in extreme circumstances.
Irrigation / Drip Systems
Planting a saguaro in an irrigated area or near a drip line that will be in use year round is strongly discouraged. Overwatering can easily happen accidentally and is often fatal.
