Barrel Cactus : FAQ and Care Information
What is a barrel cactus?
Ferocactus, meaning "fierce or wild cactus," are always cylindrical or barrel shaped and are usually among the largest cacti of the North American deserts.

Most barrel cactus have 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inch yellow-green or red flowers growing in a crown near the top of the stem. Most species bloom April through June, depending on local conditions.
Growing up to 10 feet high, all have stout ribs, Dense clusters of spines usually grow along the ribs, sometimes forming a cross in the center of the cluster.
Watering Information
Barrel cactus are native to arid desert regions and usually have only rainfall to supply their moisture needs.

Water your barrel cactus once every 7-10 days in summer by placing a hose a few feet from the base and giving the plant a long, slow drink. Do not allow water to pool or ground to become oversaturated.

The barrel cactus doesn’t need much water in winter when it is dormant- water only once between December and February. Adequate water in spring will cause the plant to produce a large yellow flower.
